I am new to this forum. Would like to know difference between PHPBB and VBulletin

phpBB is free, coded by enthousiasts and has basic features. (fun for starters)
vBulletin is a commercial script, coded by professionals, with enhanced and well balanced features (great for everybody)

Also the difference is community support.

While vB is paid, the number of amazing ad-ons (which are usually free) is immense. phpBB does have hacks which are created for it, but they are just not in the same league (IMHO).

I'm going to have to agree with Alex on this one :) The vB plugin system is extremely extremely robust. It allows installing most hacks on the fly with little downtime, just a few simple clicks and sometimes a template edit. Adding new non-stock features to your bulletin board has never been any easier. You can install an entire arcade with about 3 clicks :D

I prefer vbulletin, but for free i think SMF is the right way to go.
