Ever since vBT went down and merged into vBorg, I think the template mod scene has degraded. What do you think? Maybe I am wrong but I no longer find any true innovating template modificatins such as the 'split categories' ..
Which ones do you find innovating that I perhaps have missed?

Well, the plug-in system has eradicated a lot of template mods. Almost everything is a plug-in these days, even if it could be done with a template modification. :(
I think that templates having their own site was good, in that people who visited there were only focussed on templates, but bad in that a lot of people would get to vBorg and go no further. So I think there were pros to combining the two sites.
But sadly it seems at this stage as though the cons are winning out. :(

Ever since vBT went down and merged into vBorg, I think the template mod scene has degraded. What do you think?I keep coming here, hoping to find it. I just don't see any sustained discussions.
The table-less vB effort seems like it has the potential to form the nucleus of a template mod scene--but it keeps aborting itself in a fury of personality clashes.
It seems to me that most folks just want to download someting to make vB look like their favorite RPG, and be done with it.
I believe that the templates have the power to shape the user experience and the nature of the community. I would love to discuss it with anyone who cares to participate--let's talk!

peterska2-
If I remember correctly, you posted a message in another forum looking to start a coding study group....
How about a templating study group?
Something that i have been thinking about for a while--that might be interesting as a group project--is mapping the templating system:listing out, for each template, which templates are called, which variables, conditionals and styles are used, maybe which varibles could be used within a template that are not part of the default.

my firsdt ever release for vB was a nice simple template mod that someone requested..... back then vBT was a popular place and i visited it often to get new updates and stuff, this was vB2 times.... when i used to help out at vbportal (was a vb hangout / free skin place). vbt turned to crap and then got merged with the worse off vborg
