folks-
I find that i am getting really annoyed by stuck threads--especially in forum that have screens full of them.
I understand their value, but think they lose that value once they have been read.
I have figured out a way to make them disappear, once they are no longer "new." my question is--do you think this is an okay idea?
Have any of you ever wanted to go back and reread an old sticky thread?

theres been lots of times i've had to go back and check stickies, they are updated quite alot on some forums and getting that link they had in them again is really handy without having to try and find the thread.
BUT
for some forums making them drop down once read is a good idea as they are normally "for the newbs" stickies and so they dont really need to be read more than once of twice

In general my moderators are pretty good at not having more than four or five stickies per forum and our users are referred to our expanded FAQ (http://www.ten-tenths.com/forum/faq.php) for details on posting etc.
We find that anything "rules" related is moved to an FAQ item and our sign-up terms refer people to the FAQ as well.

problem with using the FAQ is that no-one really reads it, cause everyone normally leaves it as default :|

I like to use the FAQ where possible and would rather just link to it when needed. For example, even create a sticky that links ot the FAQ ;) I think it's more appropriate to keep that sort of thing in the help system.
I also rename the 'FAQ' link to 'Help'.

... not having more than four or five stickies per forumThat seems a *lot*. Most forums Have such deep headers/breadcrumbs/navbars/etc, that all I can see in the first screenful is 3 or 4 threads! If you have 4 no-longer-new-stickies at the top of the forum, then I have to scroll to the second screenful to get any new content! (I run at 1024 x 768 screen res).

Thats just bad design.I think so too. I'm in the midst to trying to tear the whole forumdisplay template apart, and re-arrange everything. I'll share some results here soon! (still some puzzles to solve.)
