Okay, when do you use stickies, and when do you use announcement? I'm trying to figure out a best-practices strategy.

It seems to me that lots of forums use a single-post, closed, sticky threads to display rules and such that are really announcements.

Also does it bother anyone else when they have to scroll past 3/4 of a screens worth of old, already-read stickies to get to the new posts in a forum?

i use anoucements for new updates and try to consolidate the stickys if something is no longer relevent it gets unstuck. i hate to see so many stickys it makes you wonder where the fun starts. imo keep the stickies short and sweet and if so refer them to posts made in such and such thread in such and such forum via a link. after all most wont read all the stickies at once.

It doesn't bother me, but a lot of my users hate scrolling, and clicking even less. A couple have even asked if there is a way I can list all the relevant threads on the first page of the new threads list as they never click onto page 2 or further to read what is happening.

And the same goes for stickies. I use them very sparingly and only for a short period of time (unless it is a fundamental aspect of the forum).

I use sticky's mainly, and use announcements for rules or site-wide announcements.

I dont know why but i find stickies get read more than announcements......

It may be better to have a totally seperate announcement forum - i just dont know.

I use announcements when:
• It's a global announcement
• There are a lot of stickies on the specified board

I use stickies when:
• It only applies to the specifed forum, and there's not many stickies on that board

I use announcements when:

That's how I do it as well :).

I've always used an announcement if it's for more than one board, otherwise a sticky will suffice :)
