if you need a free graphics program, i recommend the gimp (http://www.gimp.org).

I think Photoshop is one of the best programs to use for making graphics (if not the best). After you make the graphics you can put it all together in the Admin CP.

if you installed the version of gtk listed on the site you shouldnt have any problems with installation.
if you are a windows user you grabbed the files from here right?

I still use CS - upgrade is expansive.
Anyway, I like to design in dreamweaver and photoshop and work it out in xhtml on ultraedit and merge it with the variables & phrases from vbulletin.

Photoshop (CS3) , Adobe Indesign, or Illustrator are great programs. I haven't Used GIMP, but I 'm normally doing layouts and designing websites, so the Adobe line works great. Personally I wouldn't use paint because the programs very old and limited in its capabilities. Then again if you want simplicity, that's your program.
